Featuring writing and lead vocal contributions from all four members, The Jayhawks’ extraordinary new album, XOXO, is the most diverse and wide-ranging in the group’s storied history. Rather than marking a sonic departure, though, the collection signals a sharpening of focus for the band, an elevation in understanding of who they are and what they do best. In classic Jayhawks fashion, the songs here mix the influence of American roots music with British invasion and jangly power-pop, but there’s a newfound vitality at play, as well, an invigoration of confidence and energy that could only come with the injection of fresh blood. The result is an album that, much like the band’s lush harmonies, brings multiple distinctive voices together into a singular whole, a collection that, ironically enough, finds unity in individuality and identity in reinvention.
“This album feels like a new lease on life for us,” explains Louris. “I don’t know what the future holds, but this band is full of great songwriters who deserve to be heard, and my only regret is that we didn’t do something like this sooner.”

THE STORY OF THE BEATLES 1st SINGLE AND THE SMITHEREENS RE-CREATION On September 11th, 1962, Scottish session Drummer Andy White was called to EMI Studios at 3 Abbey Road in London. Producer George Martin did not approve of Ringo Starr's drumming for studio work. It was the norm at that time to have a specialist studio drummer who knew the ways of studio work. Starr was relegated to playing tambourine on 'Love Me Do' while White played his drum kit. 'P.S. I Love You' was also recorded during this session with White playing a 'lightweight cha-cha-chá beat' on bongos rather than drums. White says he was paid £5 for the session and 10 shillings for bringing his drum kit, and did not earn any royalties from the sale of the records. This was the only time White played with the Beatles, but it was enough to get him 'into the history books', and the distinction of being one of the so-called 'fifth Beatles'. White said that on that day in the studio the only members of the Beatles he worked with were Paul McCartney and John Lennon, because they were the songwriters. 'They didn't use any written music, and what I had to do was play the routines with them to get an idea what they wanted before we could even start recording.' Fast forward to 2008, Beatles expert Tom Frangione introduced White to the Smithereens. The band asked White to record with them on their next Beatles tribute album at their House of Vibes recording studio in Highland Park, NJ. 'P.S. I Love You' was released late in 2008 on B-Sides the Beatles; 'Love Me Do' was recorded, but not released until now.

Everything changed for Auckland, New Zealand's The Beths when they released their debut album, Future Me Hates Me, in 2018. They quit their jobs, said goodbye to their hometown, and devoted themselves entirely to performing across the globe. They found themselves playing to crowds of devoted fans and opening for well-known acts like Death Cab for Cutie. Songwriter/lead vocalist Elizabeth Stokes worked on The Beths' second LP, Jump Rope Gazers, in between these intense periods of touring. Like their earlier music, the album tackles themes of anxiety and self-doubt with effervescent power pop choruses and rousing backup vocals, zeroing in on the communality and catharsis that can come from sharing stressful situations with some of your best friends. Their most emotive and heartfelt work to date, Jump Rope Gazers stares down all the hard parts of living in communion with other people, even at a distance, while celebrating the ferocious joy that makes it all worth it. 2020 release. "Some of these songs stretch back ten years, and some of them are brand new. It wasn't something we consciously set out to do, but we ended up recording an album that spans our entire journey together: falling in love, breaking up, getting married, leaving home, coming back." - Aslyn Nash. It's hard to think of a more fitting introduction to that journey than Back Of Our Minds, Kalen & Aslyn's gorgeous debut. Written over the course of a decade in which the Athens, Georgia-based duo was primarily known for their own respective projects, the songs here represent something of a look behind the curtain, a captivating series of musical journal entries that reveal the evolution of a relationship in all it's messy, honest, imperfect beauty. Kalen & Aslyn produced the album themselves, and their subtle touch is a perfect match for the record's intimate, understated performances.

In the meantime Eleanor and Matthew have released eight solo albums, collectively. They are very pleased to return to the stage in their hometown Chicago, at Pitchfork Music Festival this July.
Eleanor: Someone comes up to me at every show and asks: ''How's Matt? What's happening with The Fiery Furnaces?'' And I say, ''He's fine'' and ''Nothing at the moment.'' I'm so happy to finally have some news: ''He's fine'' and ''We're playing in July at the Pitchfork Festival.'' We didn't break up; this isn't a reunion. We're just playing the next show.
Matthew: For the last three and a quarter years I've been listening to Fiery Furnaces records every day. I think I finally get it.
After years of playing fiddle with the Oklahoma-based country outfit the Turnpike Troubadours, Kyle Nix has emerged with a new role on his debut solo album, Lightning on the Mountain & Other Short Stories. You will hear most of the Troubadours roaring as his backing band on the record but this isn’t an uninspired spin-off or half-baked reboot of a good thing. Lightning on the Mountain has an identity entirely it’s own- a western-inspired collection of literary songs, which tell stories from Nix’s own history as well as of the many unique characters he “may or may not have encountered” throughout his years on the road.
