2020 release. Fetch the Bolt Cutters is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Fiona Apple. It is Apple's first release since The Idler Wheel... in 2012. The album was recorded from 2015 to 2020, largely at Apple's home in Venice Beach. It was produced and performed by Apple alongside Amy Aileen Wood, Sebastian Steinberg and Davíd Garza; recording consisted of long, often-improvised takes with unconventional percussive sounds. Rooted in experimentation, the highly percussive album resists genre categorization. While conventional instruments, such as pianos and drum sets, do appear, the album also features prominent use of non-musical found objects as percussion. Apple described the result as "percussion orchestras". These industrial-like rhythms are contrasted against traditional melodies, and the upbeat songs often subvert traditional pop structures.

Pop on Floor It!!!, the new and second full-length effort from the Texas Gentlemen, and prepare your eardrums to be hit with everything from woozy, brass-fueled Dixieland-style jazz (“Veal Cutlass”), to slinky, chicken-scratch country funk (“Bare Maximum”) to lushly orchestrated pop-soul balladry (“Ain’t Nothin’ New”)—and that’s all in just the first 10 minutes of play time.
While the Gentlemen’s sound is clearly steeped in the classic roots, rock and pop music of the ‘60s and ‘70s, there’s a dreamy (the lilting “Sing Me to Sleep”), spacey (“Skyway Streetcar”) and occasionally progressive (“Dark at the End of the Tunnel”) element to what they do that seems to detach the music from belonging to any particular place and time. Add in elements of funk, soul, country, r&b, southern rock, gospel and essentially any other style that catches their musically omnivorous ears; an expansive and detailed approach to arrangement that sees the songs adorned with all manner of horns, strings and heavenly background vocals (“Hard Road”) and you have a collection of tunes that is more than just a mere album. Rather, Floor It!!! is a rich and righteous ride.
S.G. Goodman was raised in Western Kentucky on the Mississippi River Delta in a strict church going family of row crop farmers. Her debut solo album, co-produced with fellow Kentuckian Jim James, showcases S.G.'s otherworldly voice, which soars above a sonic blend of gritty guitars, bottomland grooves and plaintive balladry."
With a legendary career spanning nearly five decades, KANSAS has firmly established itself as one of America’s iconic classic rock bands. The band is currently comprised of original drummer Phil Ehart, bassist/vocalist Billy Greer, vocalist/keyboardist Ronnie Platt, violinist/guitarist David Ragsdale, keyboardist/vocalist Tom Brislin, guitarist Zak Rizvi, and original guitarist Richard Williams. With no signs of slowing down, KANSAS continues to perform in front of large and enthusiastic audiences around the world. The summer of 2020 marks the release of “The Absence of Presence,” KANSAS’s sixteenth studio album. The wide-ranging progressive rock album, released by InsideOut Music, follows-up 2016’s “The Prelude Implicit,” which debuted at #14 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart.
"I want nothing more than to be alone," Emily Kempf sings early on Flower of Devotion, the third album by Chicago trio Dehd. It's a startling admission coming from a songwriter who, just a year ago on Dehd's critically acclaimed Water, wrote eloquently about the joys and pains - more than anything, the necessity - of love, compassion, and companionship. But then, "admission" isn't really the right word here, given the stridency of Kempf's tone. "Loner" is a declaration.
The record ups the ante on Dehd's sound & filters in just enough polish to bring out the shining and melancholy undertones in Jason Balla and Emily Kempf's songwriting, even as it captures them at their most strident. Balla's guitar lines at times flirt with ticklish cosmic country, while at others they reflect the dark marble sounds of Broadcast. Kempf, meanwhile, establishes herself as a singer of incredible expressive range, pinching into a high lonesome wail, letting loose a chirping "ooh!," pushing her voice below its breaking point and letting it swing down there. When she and Balla bounce descending counter-melodies off one another over McGrady's one-two thumps, or skitter off over a programmed drum pad, they sound like The B-52s shaking off heartache.
What makes Flower of Devotion so impressive is how its creation seems to have strengthened its creators, both as individuals and as unit, even as they've stared down their own limitations. It's also striking just how much fun they seem to be having in the process. "It's okay to be lighthearted in the face of despair," Kempf says. It's a theme that runs through the album, from the opening back-and-forth build of "Desire" to the click-clacking chorus of "Haha," which finds them deflating their own history. Flower of Devotion was recorded in April and August of 2019 in Chicago. It will be released on Fire Talk Records on July 17th 2020.

Vinyl LP pressing. 2020 release, the fifth album from the British rockers. The follow-up to Full Nelson features 12 new tracks. The members of Massive Wagons say: "Times are hard and scary right now. We want to do all we know how to do - that's bring music to people. Everyone needs to look after each other because we are all In It Together. We hope our music sends positive vibes to everyone affected by the situation, and see you on the road when normality is restored."
Chicago bred trio The Lawrence Arms will release Skeleton Coast, their first album in six years, on July 17.
Skeleton Coast was recorded 30 miles east of El Paso, TX at Sonic Ranch Studios with longtime producer Matt Allison. It was kind of like album camp in the sense that we were in this very remote setting for two weeks and really focusing on making the record. That was a very different experience for us because we’ve always made our records in Chicago which is home and all the things about home are in the way,” says vocalist and guitarist Chris McCaughan.
The album contains the elements of the band’s sound that fans have come to love for the past two decades but recontextualizes them in a way that somehow sounds perfectly aligned with this strange time in our collective history. Although it was written and recorded before the Coronavirus upended the world, the band’s seventh studio album sounds eerily prescient as it imagines an apocalyptic future where coyotes croon and wolf packs roam free. “For a band who has been around as long as us, this is about as urgent of a record as we could make,” vocalist and bassist Brendan Kelly explains. “It may be kind of dark but it’s really about searching for light in the darkness and finding it, as small as those moments may seem. That’s sort of where we’re at: Collecting the scraps of things that could make for a bearable existence in dark times.”
2019 release, the 14th studio album from the Canadian rocker - his first since 2015's Get Up. Shine a Light's 12 tracks include the title track and a duet with Jennifer Lopez called "That's How Strong Our Love Is." This CD version has an exclusive song "The Last Night on Earth" (the LP pressing swaps that with "I Hear You Knockin'.")
There is a sting in the summer blossom of Ultimate Success Today, Protomartyr' new album. Arriving after Relatives In Descent, Protomartyr's headlong dive into the morass of American life in 2017, Ultimate Success Today is a fitting follow-up for the Detroit band.
100 gecs is the duo comprised of Laura Les and Dylan Brady. Scavenging scraps of musical influences and welding them together into dangerous machines, they destroy the competition with their army of lethal bangers. “1000 gecs And The Tree Of Clues” is a wild, reinvention of the band’s critically acclaimed 2019 debut album “1000 gecs” and includes features and remixes from artists including Fallout Boy, Charli XCX, Rico Nasty, Kero Kero Bonito, Tommy Cash, Dorian Electra, and many others.
Vinyl LP pressing. 2020 release. Love Letter is the legendary saxophonist Jimmy Heath's stunningly elegant last testament, a take on seminal ballads. Includes songs written by Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie and Kenny Dorham in addition to original material. Partially recorded in New York in the days preceding his 93rd birthday, Jimmy presided over a brilliant cast of colleagues and friends. The result is pure Heath: polished, inventive, candid, beautiful. Guest artists include Wynton Marsalis, Gregory Porter, and more.
Summer 2020, and No Age are back out on the street! Effortlessly raw and extravagant in one practiced swoop, they set their live/bedroom internal clock and get out early into a glorious windtunnel of naked beats and sunbaked guitars, forming a wave from with they hang eleven tunes. A perfectly balanced set, ranging from their classic punk and indie to ever-evolving soundscapes, in their maybe their most direct statement yet.
After completing his previous projects Postcards (where he wrote 52 songs in 52 weeks) and Ghostwriting (where he offered his songwriting to tell other peoples stories), Jens Lekman came up with a new idea. He asked fellow Swedish songwriter Annika Norlin (Hello Saferide, Säkert!) to join him. The idea was that throughout the year of 2018, the two of them would correspond through music. Each month, one of them would write a song and the next month, the other one would reply. Before starting, they did some research on famous letter writing in literature. They were struck by how you usually have to be dead and declared a genius for your correspondence to be published. That's sad, they thought, and decided this would be great to do while they were still alive. The rules were simple: - One letter each month throughout the year - in total, six songs for Jens and six for Annika. - Only one instrument could be used for each song. This was TO help them focus on the songs/letters instead of the production. Correspondence gave Jens and Annika an outlet for more spontaneous ideas, and they decided to stay under the radar by only releasing the songs on the Correspondence website, and a Spotify playlist. Most of the time they forgot that anyone else could hear the songs, and they turned out very personal. But looking back at 2018, maybe most of the personal things they wrote about - exhaustion, longing for human connection, harassment, climate change anxiety - summed up 2018 at a larger level as well.
As the project came to an end, Jens and Annika listened through the songs and felt pleased with the results. An epistolary novel in the form of twelve folksongs. Jens wrote string arrangements for half of the songs and brought in violinist Ellen Hjalmarsson and cellist Petra Lundin. For the first time since the digital release, their correspondence will be released on vinyl.
‘Rough and Rowdy Ways’ is Bob Dylan’s first album of original material in 8 years and his first since becoming the only songwriter to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, in 2016. Its 10 tracks include the three new songs released this spring: the album’s lead-off track, “I Contain Multitudes,” the nearly 17-minute epic “Murder Most Foul” and “False Prophet.”
Originally scheduled for RSD 2020 Pink Flag have decided to make 10:20 a regular LP/CD release. A glimpse into Wire's working practices, when Wire play live there are different 3 classes of pieces that are performed, new songs, old songs and 'new old' songs. The latter often involves taking something that existed on a previous release and re-working it, very often evolving a stage highlight from it. There also pieces that have never seen a major release but for some reason never fitted on an album. The best of these ideas were recorded in 2 sessions - one relating to Red Barked Tree but recorded in 2010 and another relating to Wire's latest album Mind Hive released in 2020. Incidentally celebrating the decade Matt Simms has been with the band. The album divides in to two halves - the 2010 side & the 2020 side - hence the title.

THE KINGDOM features some of the most potent songwriting of Rossdale's career, highlighted by the pummeling "Flowers on a Grave," as well as the noise hurricane "Quicksand" which finds him showcasing a vulnerability like rarely before. "It encompasses my present inability to find a lasting significant other," the singer openly admits of the track's inspiration. "I like the idea of until you find that perfect love that people are in quicksand in the attempt to find love. How love is implosive because people are so weird these days. That's a very poignant song for me." And then there's "Undone," a heart-wrenching ballad written in a burst of inspiration that he describes as "very pure" and untainted. "I'm really proud of that song," Rossdale says. "It has none of the pressure of outside forces and white noise. I stayed true to it." In many ways, with Bush's new album, Rossdale is creating the type of music-and the world-he hopes to see. As he explains, The Kingdom is a utopic ideal-a reaction to a world full of "judgement and self-righteousness and mob mentality and where everyone knows better than everyone else." "The Kingdom was this place that I imagined where likeminded people could go and be free and artists and musicians and painters and people could think for themselves and don't hold any judgement over anyone else," Rossdale offers.

"Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards create a stunning, forward-looking sound that charts a path for innovation in folk music." -PopMatters
"...vocally superb... amazing talent with the fiddle" -Maverick "Like many of the best "folk" bands, this talented quartet is much more of an uncategorisable and dynamic force" -Americana UK "... their close and complex harmonies and imaginative arrangements signified the best of folk right now." -The Bluegrass Situation Expanding on the boundaries of what an indie-folk band can be, Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards take their extensive string music background, add their knowledge of folk and roots music, and incorporate an edgy pop sensibility to create their latest album, BITTER BETTER. A stunning lesson in all the ways string instruments can be played- bowed, plucked, percussively - the album showcases Cortese and multi-instrumentalist producer Sam Kassirer (Lula Wiles, Lake Street Dive) striving to capture the most adventurous approach to each moment. The result is an album that incorporates dance-worthy foundational grooves, synth, and loops to push the boundaries of the genre. The band has been invited to support The Mountain Goats on their extended US tour, which kicks off in late April.
Lianne La Havas's self-titled, third album spans the arc of a relationship. "What plays a big role in the album is the idea of the life cycle of plants and nature—equating this journey with a seasonal thing that blooms, thrives, goes away, and comes back even stronger," she says. Its musical references are as varied as Milton Nascimento, Joni Mitchell, Jaco Pastorious, Al Green, and Destiny’s Child. In keeping with the album's intimate feel, everyone who contributed is a trusted collaborator, including longtime songwriting ally Matt Hales, co-producer Beni Giles, and guest co-producer Mura Masa.
Nuclear Assault was a NYC thrash metal band that formed in 1984. They were one of the main bands of the genre to emerge from the East Coast along with Overkill, Whiplash, Toxik, Carnivore, and Anthrax. "Game Over" was their debut album on Combat Records. Leaving Anthrax to their destiny, bassist (and co-founder) Dan Lilker formed Nuclear Assault, taking 'Thrax roadie John Connelly with him on vocals and guitar. On Game Over, whilst drawing from Lilker's contributions to Fistful of Metal and Speak English or Die, Nuclear Assault debuts a delightfully ugly thrash, crossover and speed metal hybrid dripping with humour and 80s paranoia.
Relapse Records proudly presents ZOMBI's new album, 2020. Their first new album in 5 years, 2020, showcases the songwriting prowess that has pushed the duo of Steve Moore (synthesizers, guitars, bass) and A.E. Paterra (drums) to evolve throughout their storied, 20 year career. ZOMBI has strived to build upon and expand their sound with every release. From the pulse-pounding, dramatic opener "Breakthrough & Conquer", to the melodic bass whirls found in "XYZT", 2020 proves to be ZOMBI's most riff-intensive album. At first a soundtrack of driving musical euphoria, 2020 takes a sharp turn into uncharted waters - "Earthscraper" is reminiscent of a space where sounds of sludge and doomlike-riff crushers dominate the soundscapes. Synthwave and neon crescendos are furloughed in favor of Blue Oyster Cult inspired progressive epics. A truly therapeutic loop of immersive instrumental rock, 2020 might just be ZOMBI's most ambitious album yet.
Prolific, creative and eclectic Canadian producer/musician, Poirier, is back with new album Soft Power. As usual with his music, it's hard to pinpoint all the genres and references on the album, with its irresistible warm, acoustic, electronic vibe that will make anyone move and dance. It bends boundaries, resulting in compositions that mix several styles and eras. His successful dance parties (Qualite de Luxe, Bounce le Gros, Karnival) hold legendary status in Montreal nightlife history.
Shallou (Joe Boston) is an LA-based artist, record producer and environmentalist. New album, Magical Thinking, will be available on CD on June 5th. Features his hit single/title track, and the more recent "Forget" as the lead-off.

Do You Turn Red? is both a guidepost pointing toward what may come - such rich mood and color practically begs for transmedia worldbuilding - and a snapshot of this moment. Peter Manos is at the front of his career, full of ideas, and all of them tangibly intimate. Despite joining Capitol in 2019 and relocating from Dallas to the heart of LA, Manos still makes music in a vacuum of sorts. He works almost exclusively solo out of his apartment, in a bedroom turned recording den. 2020 EP release.
A never-before-released studio album vinyl by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack, New Jersey studio on March 8, 1959, and featuring the legendary drummer-whose centennial is being celebrated this year-along with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt. The 6-song set includes 2 previously unissued compositions: "Quick Trick" and "Jimerick."
It's been just under three years since Samantha Crain released her 5th album and the elapsed time it took to make this 6th record was troubled to say the least. In 2017, a fusion of injuries sustained in multiple car wrecks, tendonitis, carpal tunnel, and psychosomatic manifestation of physical ailments caused debilitating alternations of pain, numbness, and paralysis in her hands and wrists. It made playing instruments impossible. A dark period of time ensued as a result, assuming she had lost her method of self-expression and her vehicle of creativity. Through various forms of mental and physical therapies, she slowly regained the sustained use of her hands again. Having come to terms with the evident ending of her time as a performing singer/songwriter, she felt as if she d entered into a bonus round and immediately went to work playing and writing again, this time with a newly found intensity of joy and sorrow. The songs sprung out, desperate to communicate her strenuous journey.
Spiritual keyboard improvisations performed by Laraaji and recorded in a Brooklyn Church by Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, The War On Drugs, Mary Lattimore). Sun Piano finds Laraaji fulfilling a lifelong ambition to return to his first instrument, learnt whilst growing up in 1950s New Jersey. A departure from his FX-soaked cosmic zither jams, these elegant miniatures nevertheless reveal enough personality and inner light to be clearly identifiable as 'Laraaji Music'. This release is the latest step in something of a late career renaissance for the New York City based musician and mystic. He first came to public attention in the late 70s via his entry in the legendary Brian Eno-produced Ambient series of albums, Ambient 3: Day Of Radiance.
Arca is one of the world's most transformative musical talents. Since breaking through with her 2012 EPs Stretch 1 and Stretch 2, she's created an unprecedented body of work drawing from club music, experimental noise, and the ballad tradition of her native Venezuela, while reaching beyond music to encompass performance, visual art, and technology. As a collaborator with Björk, Kanye West, and FKA twigs, she's stretched contemporary music's sonic boundaries and helped set the sound of her era. As a Latinx nonbinary trans woman, she's redefined the role of the diva for a new generation. Her latest work is KiCk i, the first in a series of upcoming works, each with it's own sonic theme. For the first installment, KiCk i, Arca pursues pleasure, dignity, and dance floor liberation by refracting club music, reggaetón, and pop through her radical vision.
Yaeji's 'What We Drew' is titled intentionally; the project is as much indebted to her own singular creative vision as it is to her network of close-knit collaborators and friends, a team she's described as a 'family business.' She's inspired by both Korean indie rock and electronica that she listened to as a teenager in Seoul as well as late '90s and early 2000s hip hop and R&B and in her first full-length release. While entirely self-produced, she's careful to classify it as a mixtape, which belies the way that these songs came together: 'Each track is almost like a snippet of my life, a look into my diary or something, where it's reflective of how I was specifically feeling during that time.'
Bing & Ruth, the ever-evolving project helmed by New York composer David Moore, is releasing Species, the 7-track, 49-min record July 17. Species is an exploration of the sonic possibilities of the Farfisa organ, aided only by a clarinet and double bass.
Double vinyl LP pressing. 2020 release. Grayson Capps' South Front Street is a 16-song retrospective of the acclaimed South Alabama singer-songwriter's career, compiled by his wife and longtime musical foil, Grammy Award-winning producer/engineer, Trina Shoemaker. More than just a standard Best Of compilation presenting Grayson Capps most popular work, Shoemaker selected songs that have personal significance in their journey together. She titles the collection South Front Street, named after the street where Capps lived in an abandoned shotgun house amid an assortment of outsiders and ne'er-do-wells that he credits as the inspiration for finding his voice as a songwriter. Taking it one step further, Shoemaker revisited each of the original recordings, remixing many of the songs from scratch, essentially presenting them here anew. Some of Capps best known work will be heard for the first time in their studio incarnations by many of even Capps most devout fans.

NZCA LINES, the Pitchfork, Guardian, BBC 6 Music and NPR-tipped project of producer and multi-instrumentalist, Michael Lovett, will release his new album 'Pure Luxury' on 10 July 2020 via Memphis Industries. Written and produced almost entirely by Lovett, yet featuring a wide range of collaborators, Pure Luxury revels in both the insular ' the sound of one man processing anxiety-inducing world events - and the communal. It is a record of diverse styles, voices and textures, expanding the musical universe of Lovett's previous albums whilst cementing his own playful voice with an inescapable sense of joy and excitement. Indeed, perhaps that's what we need most when the world seems to be falling apart. Tomorrow might be scaring the hell out of us, but, as Lovett reminds us on the album's closing track, 'Tonight is all that really matters, as long as we keep dancing'.
