Letter To You is Bruce Springsteen’s new studio album with the E Street Band, and is a rock album fueled by the band's heart-stopping, house-rocking signature sound. Recorded at his home studio in New Jersey, Letter To You is Springsteen’s 20th studio album, and is his first album including the E Street Band since 2012’s High Hopes and their first performances together since 2016’s The River Tour.
“I love the emotional nature of Letter To You,” says Springsteen. “And I love the sound of the E Street Band playing completely live in the studio, in a way we’ve never done before, and with no overdubs. We made the album in only five days, and it turned out to be one of the greatest recording experiences I’ve ever had.”
Letter to You includes nine recently written Springsteen songs, as well as new recordings of three of his legendary, but previously unreleased, compositions from the 1970s, “Janey Needs A Shooter,” “If I Was The Priest,” and “Song For Orphans.” Springsteen is joined on Letter To You by Roy Bittan, Nils Lofgren, Patti Scialfa, Garry Tallent, Stevie Van Zandt, Max Weinberg, Charlie Giordano and Jake Clemons. The album was produced by Ron Aniello with Bruce Springsteen, mixed by Bob Clearmountain and mastered by Bob Ludwig.
In the horror genre, sequels are perfunctory. As the insufferable film bro Randy explains in Scream 2, “There are certain rules that one must abide by in order to create a successful sequel. Number one: the body count is always bigger. Number two: the death scenes are always much more elaborate—more blood, more gore. Carnage candy. And number three: never, ever, under any circumstances, assume the killer is dead.” Last Halloween, Los Angeles experimental rap mainstays Clipping ended their three-year silence with the horrorcore-inspired album There Existed an Addiction to Blood. This October, rapper Daveed Diggs, and producers Jonathan Snipes and William Hutson return with an even higher body count, more elaborate kills, and monsters that just won’t stay dead.
Visions of Bodies Being Burned is less a sequel than it is the second half of a planned diptych. It turns out, Clipping took to the thematic material of horrorcore like vampires to grave soil. Before the release of There Existed an Addiction to Blood, Clipping and Sub Pop Records divided the material up into two albums, designed to be released only months apart. However, a global pandemic and multiple canceled tours pushed the release of the project’s “part two” until the following Halloween season.
Visions of Bodies Being Burned contains sixteen more scary stories disguised as rap songs, incorporating as much influence from Ernest Dickerson, Clive Barker, and Shirley Jackson as it does from Three 6 Mafia, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and Brotha Lynch Hung. Clipping’s angular, shattered interpretations of existing musical styles are always deferential, driven by fandom for the object of study rather than disdain for it. Clipping reimagine horrorcore—the purposely absurdist hip-hop subgenre that flourished in the 1990s—the way Jordan Peele does horror cinema: by twisting beloved tropes to make explicit their own radical politics of monstrosity, fear, and the uncanny.
The album features a host of collaborators: Inglewood’s Cam & China, fellow noise-rap pioneers Ho99o9, Tortoise guitar genius Jeff Parker, and experimental LA drummer Ted Byrnes. The final track, “Secret Piece,” is a performance of a Yoko Ono text score from 1953 that instructs the players to “Decide on one note that you want to play/Play it with the following accompaniment: the woods from 5am to 8am in summer,” and features nearly all of the musicians who appeared on both albums.
Since their last album, Daveed Diggs—the group’s Tony and Grammy Award-winning rapper—has starred in the TNT science fiction series, Snowpiercer, voiced a character in Pixar’s Soul, and portrayed Frederick Douglass in Showtime’s The Good Lord Bird. Writer Rivers Solomon’s novella based on Clipping’s Hugo-nominated song “The Deep” has been nominated for the Nebula, Hugo, and Locus Awards, and won the Lambda Literary Award for best LGBTQ SF/Fantasy/Horror novel. Clipping’s song “Chapter 319”—a tribute to George Floyd (AKA Big Floyd) the former DJ-Screw affiliated rapper who was murdered by police officers in May of 2020—was released on Bandcamp on June 19th and raised over $20,000 for racial justice charities. A clip of the song also became a popular meme on TikTok, generating over 50,000 videos in which teenagers rapped the song’s lyrics (“Donald Trump is a white supremacist, full stop...”) directly into the frowning faces of their conservative parents. The band also contributed a Skinny Puppy-esque rework of J-Kwon’s “Tipsy” to Save Stereogum: An ‘00s Covers Comp.

There is always water.
In flowing rivers, in falling raindrops, in waves that will tear us to pieces, in ice cold glasses toasting the living and the dead. Water can carve away at mountainsides over eons, or come crashing over the city in an instant. Animals, fugitives, loners, and crumbling signs of life swim through the depths of the Mountain Goats’ Getting Into Knives, due October 23 via Merge. Like an eight-foot swell of blades, John Darnielle, Matt Douglas, Peter Hughes, and Jon Wurster ground the songs in the impermanence of permanence and the certainty of uncertainty, the casual and subtle threat that everything will come to an end.
Winter Is For Lovers was a lifetime in the making... a solo lap-steel guitar piece incorporating elements of delta blues, flamenco, and even Satie-like minimalism, this work resonates with lyrical virtuosity, originality and soul. In some ways Winter Is For Lovers is a love letter to Ben Harper’s longtime fans who have always revered his guitar virtuosity; it’s the record they always wanted him to make. For many other music lovers, this record is a revelation, an unknown side to a celebrated artist showing a sense of meticulousness, depth and music history that will add new dimensions to an already renowned career.
As a child, before Ben Harper was even playing music, he sat at the feet of folk luminaries like Rev Gary Davis, John Fahey, Ry Cooder and others in his grandparents Folk Music Center in Claremont, CA, soaking up their influence and passion for pure guitar music. As a teenager, while discovering his own musical gifts, he was repairing guitars and being mentored by many of these artists, most notably, Taj Mahal. While his musical path has taken him to worldwide fame playing rock and roll, and many other idioms, that pure guitar music has always been central to his musical heart.
Ultimately, Winter Is For Lovers is a very personal statement from Ben Harper, drawing from the bountiful garden of his earliest musical impressions and propelling him into the future with an elegiac masterpiece.
I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME, or iDKHOW, is a new project led by Dallon Weekes (Panic! At The Disco). Earning press acclaim, their debut EP hit #1 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers Chart. iDKHOW initially had a curated storyline, believed to have been a decades-old band that never got a big break until 2017, when an anonymous donor released recovered video footage that hints otherwise, leading fans, music historians and conspiracy theorists to debate. Debut album, RAZZMATAZZ, available 10/16. Bone White LP.

On White Bronco, Action Bronson's 2018 release, he rapped "my next album's only for dolphins," and the principled MC is nothing if not true to his word. Thus, "Only For Dolphins", out this fall on Loma Vista. A Queens legend, respected for his idiosyncratic pen and vivid raps, Bronson is a decade into his career and still deepening his skillset. With "Only For Dolphins" he wants to take the listener on a tour of his creativity. Welcome to his world.

A vibrant electronic fusion of lounge, jazz, and disco is maybe not the first (or fifth) thing you would expect to hear from one of the world's most renowned modern composers and ambient tape loop pioneers, but upon first listen, it makes so much sense that one wonders why it didn't happen sooner.
After years of producing and mentoring slews of young artists in 1990s Williamsburg, Brooklyn, William Basinski moved to Los Angeles. There he hired a young studio assistant, Preston Wendel, who eventually introduced his own works to the curious composer. That spawned a creative partnership that inspired Wendel to persuade Basinski to haul out his saxophone. Five years later, SPARKLE DIVISION has arrived with their enchanting debut album, To Feel Embraced. Produced by SPARKLE DIVISION at Basinski's Musex International in Los Angeles, the duo were joined by a few notable friends: Mrs. Leonora Russo (who Basinski affectionately calls "the true Sicilian Sparkle Division, my Brooklyn Mom, the Queen of Williamsburg") offers her sparkling voice to "Queenie Got Her Blues"; fabled free-jazz icon and genuine bodhisattva, the late Henry Grimes, contributed upright bass and violin to the aptly-named "Oh Henry!" ("Lotta babies gonna be born from this one," Henry and Margaret Davis Grimes playfully declared); and London vocalist Xeli Grana offers her ethereal voice to the album's meditative title track. Conceived and nearly completed in 2016, the increasing environmental and political infernos gave Basinski and Wendel cold feet about unleashing a record intended to be fun, loving, and prone to bouts of euphoria. But as Basinski exclaimed, "Well, damn it, if the time ain't right now, it never will be! Let's do this!"
"Shadow of Life" is the ten song debut album from Umbra Vitae, recorded and mixed by Kurt Ballou at God City Studios. Guitars and bass were recorded by Mike McKenzie at The Black Coast. The album was mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege.
Intro “Decadence Dissolves” is a Schuldiner-esque calm before the storm. “Ethereal Emptiness” and “Atheist Aesthetic” soon rip everything apart, methodically downshifting from blackened to brutal in tone. “Mantra of Madness” then emerges as a monster of a song, driven by inhuman drumming and traditional death metal riffing. This pattern of intensity continues in “Fear is a Fossil”, “Polluted Paradise”, and “Intimate Inferno”. All are motion sickness inducing numbers that violently lurch in aural agony. It’s here one realizes that this album never lets up. “Return to Zero” takes it to another level, viciously grinding as the lines “Return to zero, bite down on the chain, bow down to no one” repeat as mantra. This leads to “Blood Blossom” an amalgamation of metal ferocity and hardcore spirit that could very well be the heaviest track of them all. Infectious closer “Shadow of Life” then screams in terror as it tells the tale of the internal battle of the dark and light within us all.
Double vinyl LP pressing in gatefold jacket. 2020 release. Pallbearer are back with Forgotten Days. Carefully plotted throughout 2019, the quartet's fourth long-player eschews the compositional maximalism that hoisted predecessor Heartless aloft for the heaviest groove and the most visceral hooks to come out of the Arkansans to date. Spread across eight towering tracks, Forgotten Days sees Pallbearer embracing their roots again, but this time with a doom-infused metallic spark that's infectious and transcendent. Indeed, this album is everything a Pallbearer fan could love. It is a raw and riveting evolution, filled with emotion and the unique downcast exuberance that has defined the band's storied career.
Dan Penn, writer of such classic hits as 'Do Right Woman,' 'Dark End of The Street,' and 'I'm Your Puppet,' among them, shines in his first release of new original material since 'Nobody's Fool' in 1973 and his first full production studio album since 1995's 'Do Right Man.' Recorded in Nashville and Muscle Shoals alongside their finest musicians, Penn, the pioneer of Country Soul, turns in a performance as timeless as the genre itself.
Heavy metal legends Sevendust deliver their thirteenth studio album, Blood & Stone which sees the band working once again with producer Michael "Elvis" Baskette (Alter Bridge, Tremont, Slash) who helmed 2018's All I See Is War. From the pulsating intro of album opener "Dying To Live" to closer and single "The Day I Tried To Live," Sevendust continue to push the sound they have made their own for more than 25 years. Further tracks like "Love," "Blood From A Stone," "Kill Me" and "Against The World" showcase why the band has been adored by fans and critics alike. Lajon Witherspoon, Clint Lowery, John Connolly, Vince Hornsby and Morgan Rose have raised the bar with Blood & Stone and the new material will sit perfectly alongside the band's most seminal tracks live.

After completing their 2019 Speck tour in the fall, The Boxmasters' Bud and J.D. did as they ordinarily do and went back to the studio with a few songs and started recording. Another album titled Boxmasters '66 was already finished before the tour, so with only the idea that the new songs would be a follow-up to that the recording process began. Drawing upon the sounds of the Vox Jaguar, Mellotron and Farfisa keyboards The Boxmasters formed their ninth release Light Rays.
Writer/ director Haroula Rose, who co-wrote on the film’s soundtrack, made sure the music was not lost in the film revealing, “It was a deeply embedded process, and I had the tools to share with the actors and crew along the way which felt organic and special. As we filmed our first shot, I played Will Oldham's track ‘Always Bound’ by a campfire at dusk. We were all able to connect and to be in the same emotional space with the music as a guiding creative light. Being able to weave the fibers of the songs and music together as its own character essentially, was truly a gift, along with the period appropriate 70's music. I am deeply grateful to these songwriters and to Thirty Tigers for being such incredible collaborators on this unique journey.”
Thirty Tigers President David Macias praises the hard work Rose and her team put into the soundtrack saying “I am incredibly proud of this film, and that definitely goes for the music that was produced for it. From the score that Zac Rae produced to the original songs from amazing artists like Rodney Crowell, J.D. Souther, Will Oldham and Haroula, the soundtrack is an incredible body of work on its own. But the way it reinforces the film is a testament to the great job Haroula and music supervisor Michael Turner did.”

Storytelling isn't merely a vehicle for self-expression, it's a mode of transportation. A two-way mirror in which we process gilded dreams and grotesque nightmares, the transgression of cultural taboos and the upholding of ancient tradition. It's also the animating idea behind much of the greatest popular music ever made. Consider Exotica, the new album from Houston iconoclast, Fat Tony, the latest brilliant entry in that fabled tradition, what Outkast once described as "shooting game in the form of story rapping."
Will Kimbrough has spent a lifetime writing songs and performing them, along the way becoming a respected recording artist, producer and musician. Kimbrough's latest endeavor, Spring Break, is a solo acoustic record in the tradition of Folkways and Vanguard folk records. "Spring Break is a tip of the artistic hat to personal favorite solo singer-songwriter albums like Skip James Today!, Nebraska, Pink Moon and Mississippi John Hurt Today! - it's one man, a guitar, National guitar or mandolin, a harmonica on a rack, his voice, his songs," Kimbrough notes.
With two hearts and one truth, lifelong musicians, longstanding friends, and eternal brothers Brent Smith and Zach Myers put forth a body of work encompassing vulnerability, fearlessness, honesty, outrage, love, and understanding. Smith & Myers, produced byGRAMMY Award-winner and longtime collaborator Dave Bassett, is the duo’s first full-length album and first original music since releasing a pair of acoustic cover EPs, Acoustic Sessions, Part 1 and Acoustic Sessions, Part 2, in 2014 when fans first fell in the love with the magic that is created between Brent and Zach in the studio and on stage, leading to Smith & Myers live shows that instantly sold out. With no boundaries on what their songwriting could discuss on the new album, Brent and Zach explore everything from certain personal topics that they have left largely unexplored until now, to commentary on children being ripped from their parents at the border, to the reactive nature of social media, to our national reckoning with racial and systemic injustice– focusing not on politics, but on right and wrong and our connection as human beings.
Kate Stables' group This Is The Kit have created a name for themselves with songs that untangle emotional knots and weave remarkable stories. Their second album for Rough Trade Records, Off Off On, (October 23, 2020) is a beautifully clear distillation of Stables' songwriting gifts. The songs are exquisitely astute, the album title suggesting life's glitchy rhythms ' 'two steps backwards, one step forwards' Swinging between good places and bad places inside and out.'
New EP from British punk rock legends largely credited as one of the first punk rock bands from the UK and also influencers of gothic rock. The band have had nine charting top 40 singles in the UK and a rich career spanning from the late 70's.
Once Upon One Time is the latest evolution in a creative partnership that dates back to 2016 for Okey Dokey. While crafting Once Upon One Time, as Okey Dokey called on an impressive list of aforementioned collaborators that also includes My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemel and the Shins' Yuuki Matthews to handle mixing duties throughout. "The record has so much more dynamics than what we would've gotten by ourselves," Martin exclaims, and a sense of vibrancy indeed rings through Once Upon One Time. And that sense of community is what makes Once Upon One Time such a memorable and deeply felt listening experience-music that sounds unbelievably human even when exploring some far-out sounds, with an emotive streak that's easily relatable. "We wanted to write a record that had honesty, as well as experiences you can reflect on," Martin explains. "Every mythic story is based on an energy flow that's passed through oral tradition, and that openness is something we wanted to pump up as much as possible." And Fisher succinctly and perfectly sizes up the group's aims: "We want to make timeless music. I don't care much for anything else."

On December 26th, 2018, Emily Cross received an excited email from a friend: Brian Eno was talking about her band on BBC radio. "At first I didn't think it was real," she admits. But then she heard a recording: Eno was praising "Black Willow" from Loma's self-titled debut, a song whose minimal groove and hypnotic refrain seem as much farewell as a manifesto: I make my bed beside the road / I carry a diamond blade / I will not serve you. He said he'd had it on repeat. Don't Shy Away is shot through with revelations, both joyful ("Given a Sign") and sober (the clear-eyed title track), and winds from moment to moment with confidence and humor. Like Loma's first effort, there's a tangible and sensuous feeling of place; insects sing in the trees, an ill-fitting door creaks in the wind.
Vinyl LP pressing. Includes digital download. Karma & Desire - a follow up to critically acclaimed records AZD, Ghettoville, Hazyville, and more - includes collaborations with Sampha, Zsela, Aura T-09 (co-runs Evar Records with John Frusciante), Vanessa Benelli Mosell and Rebekah Christel. The album will be accompanied by 'a broken romance espionage ethereal short film' by creative director and performance artist Lee Nachum aka Bootee that explores a number of dichotic themes. These themes are to be revealed across the campaign (and beyond) through both digital and physical creative marketing 'moments', which kicked off with a surprise 49min audio file from Actress entitled '88'. '88' was revealed by Actress in July and made available to stream and download for free through Bandcamp before retreating into the ether as quickly as it came. The release marked the first new music from the producer (outside of his Young Paint alias) since 2018's team-up with the London Contemporary Orchestra.
