David Bowie

Decca launched its much-loved World Of Series in 1968. The first album looked at one of the label’s biggest selling artists – yet hardly one that chimed with the counter culture in 1968. The World Of Mantovani – SPA 1, (or PA 1 in mono) – was a 14 track collection, each track a different selection from his sizeable Decca album catalogue. Released in the autumn of the year, it acted as a perfect primer, and its price, 17s, put it shy of the 37s 6d of the full price albums. Its whole raison d’etre was to drive sales of the artist’s deeper repertoire – dip in here and then indulge further – the rear sleeve clearly offered the catalogue numbers of the parent albums.

The series would run throughout the 70s and become a ubiquitous feature of the label. It was taken so seriously, that David Bowie himself offered the track listing for his own addition to the series, (SPA/PA 58), which was released in March 1970 after the success of the Phillips-released single Space Oddity. It also showed how the World Ofs could be a veritable treasure trove for rarities and one-offs, as it contained the first official release of Let Me Sleep Beside You, Karma Man and In The Heat Of The Morning.

According to Kevin Cann’s invaluable book on Bowie’s early years, Any Day Now, Bowie bought a copy of the original himself from a record shop on Beckenham High Street. It became a big seller – indeed, Decca repackaged it – when Bowie finally became a big star. Imagine the shock people had thinking they had The Jean Genie when what they had was Uncle Arthur and Little Bombardier.

David Bowie / Marlene Dietrich

After legendary English musician David Bowie started his movie career by playing the lead in The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) he was starring in Just a Gigolo (Schöner Gigolo, armer Gigolo). The West German movie about a Prussian officer who works as a gigolo in a brothel run by the Baroness (Marlene Dietrich) after he returns home from the great war, included different songs. Bowie contributed a piece of music to the film; his so-called "Revolutionary Song", played by a band called The Rebels. Later it became a collector’s item. Besides this track the 7-inch include the 1928 title song Just a Gigolo, performed by Marlene Dietrich. It was her last film appearance and last song she recorded during her lifetime.

Revolutionary Song / Just a Gigolo is available as a limited edition of 8.000 individually numbered copies on transparent blue vinyl.

James Brown

Sho is Funky Down Here and The Grodeck Whipperjenny are a pair of albums that are the result of an unlikely but highly productive musical relationship between James Brown, a superstar at the creative and commercial peaks of his long career, and David Matthews, a then young arranger-musician whose limited professional experience had little or nothing to do with the funk and soul of his collaborator.

James Brown’s psychedelic album, created by his then-bandleader David Matthews, and issued at the same time as Matthews’ classic The Grodeck Whipperjenny. Underground, fuzzy, rambling psych-funk. The genesis of Brown’s “Talking Loud And Saying Nothing,” a 1990s hip hop sample staple, informing A Tribe Called Quest, Large Professor, Brand Nubian and others.

Lacquered directly from the original master tapes at Capitol Studios. This is the first official reissue of both of this rare titles. Contains an extensive booklet with full annotation, liner notes by Brown historian Alan Leeds and never-before-published photos.

A psychedelic classic, created by his James Brown’s bandleader David Matthews, the first album issued on Brown’s famed People imprint. As progressive as it is funky, this album was issued in tandem with another Matthews project issued under Brown’s name – Sho Is Funky Down Here. Captain Beefheart

Trout Mask Replica is a touchstone in the history of recorded music. The mix of dada absurdist blues and previously unexplored experimental avenues has long been praised as one of the greatest albums of all time. As so eloquently put by John Peel, "If there has been anything in the history of popular music which could be described as a work of art in a way that people who are involved in other areas of art would understand, then Trout Mask Replica is probably that work.”

In full partnership with the Zappa Family Trust and to celebrate the relaunch of the seminal Bizarre label imprint, Third Man Records is proud to announce Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's Trout Mask Replica.

Out of print on vinyl for nearly ten years, this remaster was helmed by industry legend Bob Ludwig and cut by the estimable Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Utilizing crystalline-quality safety masters kept in the Zappa family vault for decades by the trustworthy Joe Travers, the audio here is positively glorious. Every last skronk breathes full life into the room. Every twisted guitar figure uncurls onto paths previously unpaved. Every last bark and howl shines resolute through the vast emptiness of your mind.

Previous countless Trout Mask Replica repressings used scans of scans of scans of the cover image, but the original Cal Schenkel cover photo has been tracked down and reproduced here at its clearest — its resolution from the original release in 1969. If you’ve only ever seen a jpg online or fuzzy, smeared-looking CD issues from the 90’s, be prepared to be wowed by the fully engaging spectrum this iconic image casts. This 2xLP is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram black vinyl for that full-on frenetic feeling.

Alice Clark

For RSD 2019 comes the first official worldwide LP reissue of Alice Clark's highly sought-after soul jazz classic produced by Mainstream Records' Bob Shad in 1972. When it comes to legendary albums, very few can match the cult status achieved on the international jazz and funk scene by Alice Clark's eponymous album. The record, which went unnoticed when it first came out, has become one of the most sought-after albums ever since it became cult on the London jazz and funk scene in the late '80s. It is now being acknowledged as one of the best soul albums of all-times. Recorded live over two days at the Record Plant studios in New York City, the album was produced by Bob Shad and arranged by jazz veteran Ernie Wilkins with a big band setting. The music is a superb mix of jazz and soul blessed by Clark's superb singing and including two all-time favorites, "Don't You Care" and "Never Did I Stop Loving You", plus a selection of heart-wrenching songs beautifully sung by Clark. Very little is known about Alice Clark and the legendary two-day session, outside the fact that she only ever recorded one album and passed away in the early 2000s.

With this RSD release, Wewantsounds will tell the Alice Clark story for the first time and give a unique insight into the birth of this cult album with a deluxe release that will pay tribute to her talent. Featuring original artwork, remastered sound plus a deluxe 20-page booklet telling the whole story for the first time. The booklet will include many never-seen, jaw-dropping photos of the session by legendary NY jazz photographer Ray Ross plus an introduction by Shad's grandchildren, Mia and Judd Apatow, liner notes by NY music journalist Marcus J. Moore, an homage by Clark's grandson, and a note by the session's original engineer, Carmine Rubino. The booklet will also reveal most of the line-up for the first time (the original LP didn't contain any musician credit) making this set a long overdue tribute to one of the best soul albums ever recorded.

A1. I Keep It Hid A2. Looking At Life A3. Don't Wonder Why A4. Maybe This Time A5. Never Dit I Stop Loving You B1. Charms Of The Arms Of Love B2. Don't You Care B3. It Takes Too Long To Learn To Live Alone B4. Hard Hard Promises B5. Hey Girl

Complesso Strumentale Italiano, Giulio Confalconieri

Decca proudly presents a unique artefact from its vaults for the first time since the original release in 1962. In Venice, August 1961, the most prominent surrealist artist of all time, Salvador Dalí staged a very unique performance at the Teatro La Fenice and Decca were on hand to document the event. Available for the first time since its original release this fascinating document is presented with its original artwork reproducing Dalí’s own designs and includes exclusive interviews with the artist himself.

Best known for his striking and bizarre images (and the Chupa Chups® logo), Salvador Dalí was a highly imaginative individual and constantly indulging in unusual and grandiose behaviour.

His public appearances were always a spectacle and in August 1961 it was announced that the Master would arrive in Venice by whale. Nobody knows whether he did or not, but certainly his presence caused the most bizarre spectacle in the most beautiful opera house, the Teatro La Fenice – in fact the first completely surrealistic stage performance Dalí had known . . .

. . . On stage a blind man watches television, a wardrobe mistress constantly irons, a carcass of beef hangs surrounded by flies, a limp watch is handed around; and before Dalí's famous paintings there are processions of limping beggars, gondoliers, and finally the Master himself in a gondolier's gleaming white uniform and a red Catalan cap.

Decca were on hand to document the event in Venice, August 1961. This iconic moment and accompanying performances were caught on record by two legendary Decca employees: Producer Erik Smith and engineer Roy Wallace*
*the co-creator [alongside his colleague Arthur Haddy] of the "Decca Tree" and Decca's unique stereo recording technique, i.e. the signature "Decca Sound"

Decca now proudly presents, for the first time since its original release in 1962, this unique artefact from the vaults. It is a fascinating insight to one of the most prominent surrealist artists of all time.

This release is lovingly presented with the original artwork [representing the original set designs by Dalí] and includes exclusive interviews with the artist himself.

With dozens of museums and permanent exhibitions around the world on one of the most iconic artists of the 20th century, this should be a true collector's item.

Francois De Roubaix

The French film composer Francois De Roubaix recorded compositions for a diversity of movies. One of them is the Belgian cult horror classic Les Lèvres Rouges. The soundtrack to the erotic vampire film consists of different musical elements and it is an seductive score. The title track included on this 7 inch is one of Francois’ finest pieces of music. The colourful compositions supports the love story and the different ways the vampires interact. Years after its recording Hip-Hop producers used samples from the score in their songs, among others Lil Wayne. The movie has been voted by authors, directors, actors and critics as one of the top horror films of all time.

According to the critic Geoffrey O'Brien: “Daughters of Darkness leans flamboyantly toward the artistic end of the Lesbian vampires spectrum, with Delphine Seyrig sporting Marienbad-like costumes and the Belgian director conjuring up images of luxurious decadence replete with feathers, mirrors, and long, winding hotel corridors. At the film’s core, however, is a deeply unpleasant evocation of a war of nerves between Seyrig’s vampire and the bourgeois newlyweds into whose honeymoon she insinuates herself.
