Old 97's return with Twelfth, their aptly titled 12th studio album, recorded this spring in Nashville, Tennessee between a tornado and a pandemic. Twelfth's lead single "Turn Off The TV" might be the unintentional anthem of 2020, celebrating the occasional, necessary need to turn off the TV set and tune out the outside world.

Celebrating life and purging angst, In Sickness & In Flames finds The Front Bottoms pushing forward with positive and creative energy. Describing their new album, they said: “When we were settling on the title, it meant something completely different to us. We could have never imagined where the world would be just six months later… this album has developed into something of its own that we no longer control the narrative of”.

Sivan’s new six-song concept EP is an infectious plea to set a relationship back on course. “A story that’s still unfolding, this small collection of songs explores an emotional rollercoaster period in my life when the feelings and thoughts were most shockingly fresh,” explains Troye Sivan. Troye recorded five of the EP’s six songs with producer Oscar Görres (The Weeknd, MARINA, Tove Lo).

An energetic and exhilarating musical rollercoaster ride. Within the first ten minutes the band have already careened through a blitz of post-punk riffing, wastoid gang shouting, a singalong anthem-for-the-disaffected and a Talking Heads-ish funk- rock workout with bits of shimmery synth and lo-fi slide guitar riffing thrown in for good measure.

One of the most creative, loved and literate bands of the last four decades return this summer with their 14th studio album Good Luck, Seeker. Standout track is the seven-minute mash-up manifesto “My Wanderings In The Weary Land”. Is it psychedelic soul? Is it trance? Is it punk?

Sugaregg roars from the speakers and jumpstarts both heart and mind. Like My Bloody Valentine after three double espressos, opener “Add It On” zooms heavenward within seconds, epitomizing the band’s newfound clarity of purpose, while the bass-driven melodies and propulsive beats of “Where to Start” and “Let You” are the musical equivalents of the sun piercing through a perpetually cloudy sky.

A collection of sonic mantras to live by, Source is a deeply personal offering in which Garcia maps cartographies around the coordinate points of her identity, her family histories, grief, afro-diasporic connections and collectivism. It's about a realization of personal and collective power: the evolution of the saxophonist’s values as she re-connects with herself, her roots and her community.

Burning deep in Girl Friday's music is an unquenchable will to survive. They don't blunt the impact of the themes they work through in their ferocious, knotty rock songs, but they don't let the more harrowing aspects of being alive and young in the 21st century daunt them, either. Dystopian shades of post-punk and noise rock abound alongside abundant optimism on this arresting debut album.

After a serious bout with COVID-19, JD’s making it his mission to bring joy and understanding through music. The album, according to Simo, holds, “a sentiment I hope we all can relate to. I try really hard to grow and account for the things about myself I want to change. In the same breath, I see how I fall short. There’s no harm in that unless you don’t keep trying.”
