Based on the graphic novel by Daniel Clowes, Ghost World stars ThoraBirch (American Beauty) as Enid, a girl whose personal style is so layeredin sarcasm, it's impossible to differentiate between her derision and hersincerity.

Inhabiting a post-high school, post-ironic suburban nowhere with her cohortRebecca (Scarlett Johansson), Enid scours everyone and everything with causticcommentary and cruel pranks-her isolation is her armor. But when a hoaxleads her to regret, she seeks to right her wrong, befriending the lovelornSeymour (Steve Buscemi), a slack-shouldered collector of ancient jazz age records. As Enid finds herself gradually attracted to the object of her ridicule, thefilm unfolds as a sort of Kafkaesque Clueless, with Birch as the anti-AliciaSilverstone.

By deftly drawing together themes of inevitability and alienation with inventivecomic moments (a cameo by Illeana Douglas as a feminazi art teacher is uncanny),droller-than-thou dialogue and a soundtrack that ranges from plaintive bluesto '60s Indian rock, director Terry Zwigoff (Crumb) has createdperhaps the most abstruse teen comedy ever.
