If you want to know why the Del McCoury Band is the hottest thing in bluegrass, and one of the few traditional bands to share headlining stages with rockers and jam bands, all you have to do is check out the title track of the new Del McCoury CD. "It's Just the Night" is a love song dressed in goth, or maybe even psychobilly regalia. You could easily imagine Nick Cave or the Cramps putting their spin on the tune, and in lesser hands it could have sounded like a novelty tune along the lines of "Monster Mash." But McCoury's high lonesome tenor and the rumbling backing vocals of the Fairfield Four strike the perfect balance between sincerity and humor, making it one of the most atypical tunes in the repertoire of a band known for its bold programming choices. The rest of the music on Night is just as eclectic as you'd expect. They take a couple of Richard Thompson numbers-"Two-Faced Love" and "Dry My Tears and Move On"-and transform them so thoroughly that they sound like mountain music standards. They rearrange Delbert McClinton's "Same Kind of Crazy," a tale of demented love and make it sound like a tender ballad and pay respects to their more spiritual side with the Don Reno standard "The Angels Singing" and the working class gospel rave up of "Man Can't Live on Bread Alone," a celebration of the simple pleasures that money can't buy.
